Do you hear Yanny or Laurel? We explain the odd auditory illusion

One person may hear the word"yanny, while next person will hear"laurel

One person may hear the word

This time, it's not about politics. However, if you hear something other than Yanny or Laurel, it may suggest that you have hearing difficulty and you should see a hearing professional.

You couldn't get on social media Tuesday without seeing Team Yanny and Team Laurel going at it.

Laurel is a stronger, lower-pitched gentleman's voice. If you are listening through headphones, you may be more likely to hear Laurel as the headphones block out more ambient sound.

Here's PolitiFact's take on the facts you need to know behind the latest internet meme. "Then your brain picks what it wants to hear and some people hear Laurel and some people hear yanny", explains Dr. Heath.

The first thing to understand is that the Reddit audio was low-quality. Some are convinced people on the other side are just trolling them.

The scientific explanation centers more on the quality of the recording and the resonance of speech sounds.

"Decided to open up Yanny Brewing Co., in Laurel, Maryland", said one user.

WebMD: Does it matter which kind of device you play it on?

It turns out it's all down to frequency that each individual is able to hear.

While Feldman herself says she hears Yanny, a lot of other people have made a case for Laurel-and a lot of people hear both (ME!).

What does hearing either word say about my hearing?

For the record, the mayor of Laurel, Md., a small city in northern Prince George's County, hears "Laurel", and so does the city administrator, according to Audrey Barnes, a spokeswoman for the City of Laurel (She also heard "Laurel", she noted).

Experts have theories on what the original audio file actually said.

That aside, Story ran an acoustic analysis on the viral recording of the computerized voice.
