Atletico Madrid's players celebrating

Three thoughts on Atletico Madrid's 3-0 win over Marseille in the Europa League final.

"We hoped that he'd be at 100 per cent and we gave him a fitness test this morning".

"You need your best players at their best level in this kind of game", Marseille coach Rudi Garcia said.

Marseille dominated the opening stages but gifted Atletico the lead when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa failed to control goalkeeper Steve Mandanda's pass out and Gabi intercepted before setting Griezmann free to finish neatly in the 21st minute.

While a late headed strike by Marseille's Kostas Mitroglou - a 74th minute substitute - could have swung the momentum, it was not to be, and the ball rebounded harmlessly off the upright. Pacific Time at the Stade de Lyon in Lyon, France.

He added that winning Europe's second-tier competition represented "more than a trophy - it's a victory for everything we stand for, for hard work and industry".

Griezmann, who grew up near Lyon but left early to pursue his career at Real Sociedad, previously had just the 2014 Spanish Supercopa to show for four seasons with Atletico.

"It is not the moment to talk about my future, I must enjoy having won a trophy, and celebrate it with the fans", said Griezmann.

The result earned Simeone his sixth trophy as Atleti coach and his second Europa League crown.

But their experiences of Wednesday's Europa League final at a cacophonous Groupama Stadium could hardly have been more contrasting.

As Atletico Madrid delivered yet another trademark performance, it was Marseille's inability to even put a dent on the course of the match which perhaps cast the best light on the monopoly Spanish clubs have heralded over European cup competitions in the recent seasons.

Real Madrid are also in the Champions League final against Liverpool at the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex, Kiev, Ukraine on May 26. "I have a great communion with my players and I can be at home or in the hotel but they will still play the same way", the 48-year-old manager concluded.

Simeone was given a four-game touchline ban from UEF after angrily confronting an official during the first leg of Atletico's Europa League semi-final matchup against Arsenal.
